The City of Cologne
Facts about the City of Cologne Cologne (Köln) is the 4th largest German metropolis and one of the oldest cities in Germany. Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, it has become a cultural, scientific and economic centre in the heart of Europe. The most remarkable highlight in Cologne is the famous cathedral ('Kölner Dom'), which is the most popular sight in Germany and whose completion needed more than 600 years. Close to the Dom you will find a beautiful promenade next to the river Rhine, just in front of the lovely Old Town. Apart from its architecture, Cologne has a number of internationally recognised museums, several nice parks and one of the largest zoos in Germany. Cologne is also famous for its carnival, which is commonly called the 'Fifth Season'. It takes place in February/March with several big parades and more than a million people celebrating on the streets. Another local specialty is 'Kölsch', a beer that is brewed only in Cologne. The traditional place to enjoy Kölsch and typical food from Cologne is the 'Brauhaus'. There are dozens of these little breweries that serve freshly brewed beer and are popular meeting points for all generations. With about 70.000 students at 13 different schools and colleges in Cologne, the University of Cologne itself is one of the largest in Germany with about 47.000 of the 70.000 students. This creates a young and vibrant atmosphere, especially in the quarters that are located directly around the University of Cologne. We are looking forward to welcome you in Cologne in spring 2010! Weather April is spring-time in Cologne. However, the weather tends to be unstable during that time of the year. Sunny weather with 25°C might be as possible as a cold and rainy day. Evenings tend to be cool, averaging around 4°C. Useful Links > Official Website of Cologne (German only)
